Goat case: 11 police officers suspended for giving secret meeting to Motiur

The police were taking Matiur Rahman, a former official of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), who was in the news for the goat case, to Kishoreganj jail from the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Court. They had gone to a restaurant during their lunch break at noon. It has been alleged that the police members bribed him and allowed him to have a secret meeting with another person in a cabin of the restaurant. The incident took place on August 12 at a restaurant named Nirala Haddi in Syednagar on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Shibpur upazila of Narsingdi.

The Kishoreganj district police have suspended 11 police members, including a sub-inspector, from their jobs for their involvement in the incident. The suspension of 11 police members was announced in an order signed by Kishoreganj Superintendent of Police Mohammad Hasan Chowdhury on Saturday evening. In this regard, Superintendent of Police Mohammad Hasan Chowdhury said, “After learning about the matter, the police formed a three-member investigation committee.” The investigation committee has found the truth of this incident. Based on this, 11 police members involved in the incident have been temporarily suspended and closed in the police lines.’

One of the temporarily suspended police members is an SI, the rest are constables. The SI’s name is Abul Kashem. The remaining 10 constables are Moniruzzaman, Md. Kabir Hossain, Imran, Nirjon Khan, Shamim Alam, Md. Roni Hossain, Shariful Islam, Tanvir Rahman, Md. Abu Said Mia and Rabindra Das. All of them have been attached to the Kishoreganj Police Lines.

The district police order said that on August 12, the police members took Matiur Rahman from Kishoreganj Jail to appear in the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge’s Court. After appearing in the court, they stopped for food at a restaurant in Narsingdi on the way back. It was alleged that the police members in charge of the escort gave various facilities to the detainee Matiur Rahman in exchange for bribes.

A three-member investigation committee was formed under the leadership of Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops) in this incident. The committee submitted a report after the investigation. The report said that the police members kept the inmate Matiur Rahman in a separate room and themselves took food in a common place. This is a clear negligence of duty.

On Saturday evening, we went to the restaurant named Nirala Haddi and spoke to the owner of the restaurant, Md. Abul Kashem Bhuiyan. After watching the CCTV footage and video of the incident that was spread on social media, he confirmed that the incident took place at his restaurant. He was staying in the restaurant at the time of the incident.

Kishoreganj District Jail Superintendent Ritesh Chakma said that former NBR officer Matiur Rahman was brought to Kishoreganj Jail on April 11. During this, he was produced before the Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Dhaka Court three times. He was last taken from Kishoreganj Jail to Dhaka to be produced on August 12 and was brought back to Kishoreganj Jail on the same day. However, on August 26, Matiur Rahman was transferred from Kishoreganj to Kashimpur-2 Central Jail.
